Last year around this time we celebrated our 40th Anniversary by putting on a series of gigs here at the Club featuring 3/4 artists a night for 10 nights. Although we don't have anything particular to celebrate this year (well, not really, more of that later) I missed the fun and camaraderie of these evenings so thought it would be nice to reproduce them on an occasional basis. So tonight we will be featuring not one but four great artists who perform here regularly at the Club, supported by a rhythm section of some of the finest players around, seen here on the last Friday of every month with my band Samara. Renowned throughout the UK, Europe and the USA the multi-award-winning saxophonist Tim Whitehead is a remarkable performer and composer with a dazzling CV. From work in the 70’s with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus (winning the Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award on the way) and the 80's with groundbreaking big band Loose Tubes to the critically acclaimed albums he made in the 90's, winning The Andrew Milne Award for Jazz, as well as the BBC Music Magazine Jazz Album of the Year, Tim has established himself as an international musician of considerable note. More recently he has collaborated with renowned contemporary classical composer Colin Riley and was the first ever musician to be made Artist in Residence at Tate Britain, resulting in a number of brilliant gigs, a highly acclaimed album “Colour Beginnings” and a short-listing for the British Composer Of The Year Award. One of the most creative and striking performers working on the UK scene, Gwyneth Herbert's remarkable voice is something quite special, bringing sophistication to her singer/songwriter material, and a wonderful “edge” to the occasional cover. Since her first CD “Bittersweet and Blue”, released 10 years ago, she has gone on to produce an immensely impressive series of CDs featuring her brilliant songs. And not content with being one of the finest singer/songwriters in the country (really) she has also won two prestigious theatrical awards for her music, had them queuing around the block at the Rochester Jazz Festival in New York, written a song-cycle about the sea which debuted at the Aldeburgh Festival and provided the music for "The A-Z of Mrs P". Last year alone saw “A Note to the New Government” commissioned by The London Sinfonietta and The Royal Philharmonic Society, two musical collaborations with artist Mel Brimfield and a new theatrical Song Cycle "The Rhythm Method". Quite brilliant. Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, Liliana Chachian is generally recognized as one of the finest Brazilian singers in Europe. This enormously experienced performer’s work as both singer and composer, has led her to collaborations with the likes of the iconic Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira and Weather Report’s drummer Dom Um Romão as well as work with artists such as The Pet Shop Boys and Snowboy. She co-wrote the first “Da Lata” album that took her on an extensive world tour, performing in major festivals and venues from New York to China and most countries in Europe. Best known at the Club for her work with her own band Olumo and as the singer with the Brazilian "house" band Samara, she delivers a powerful, rhythmic set in her native Brazilian Portuguese in a way in that only a Brazilian brought up with the music since childhood can achieve. The first artist ever to win two BBC Jazz Awards in the same year, for Best Vocalist and Best of Jazz, Liane Carroll is a dynamic vocalist and pianist whose amazing talent has been captivating audiences around the world for some years now. A featured performer at the Glastonbury Festival her albums have been received with universal acclaim and led to an hour-long special on BBC TV. Her CDs have garnered impressive reviews, “magical” (Guardian), “brilliant” (Observer), "gorgeous" and "heartfelt". A world-class performer, her powerful blues-tinged voice combined with strong piano playing and exciting infectious material, not to mention a wicked sense of humour, make her a truly remarkable performer. Quite a lineup. And although I mentioned that this wasn't to celebrate anything in particular, it is actually my birthday this month (not today!), so there may be just a touch of that in there somewhere as well. Booking advised!...
