Grand Union Orchestra at Vortex Jazz Club

A group of musicians from the Grand Union Orchestra bring a new programme to the Vortex, introducing some very special guests – Gypsy violin wizard Marek Czureja and a remarkable Bengali singer Shapla Salique– alongside Grand Union’s celebrated South Asian musicians Baluji Shrivastav (sitar, dilruba), Yousuf Ali Khan (tabla, dholak) and jazz soloists Shanti Paul Jayasinha (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Louise Elliott (tenor saxophone, flute).

Many distinctive styles of improvisation pepper the music, which combines classical Indian rags an tals, Bengali song and wild gypsy music with Latin and African rhythms and unexpectedly audacious harmony. This is a rare chance to hear a group of Grand Union musicians in an intimate, atmospheric setting.
