About
8:00PM Lucas Dodd is a highly energetic young alto saxophonist who is now starting to make serious headway in the international jazz scene. Beginning his affair with the sax from the age of 8, Lucas was soon showcasing his talents with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra demonstrating a great natural ability and gaining attention in jazz circles as an impressive prospect. After graduating from the Trinity College of Music in 2011, picking up the The Ronnie Verrel Prize For Excellence in Jazz along the way, he developed his craft by being involved with a large number of jazz ensembles including Jamie Cullum, the Gareth Lockrane Big Band, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra and The Laurence Cottle Big Band. With influences straight out of the lineage of Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker combined with the approach of modern pioneers of jazz such as Michael Brecker and Chris Potter, Lucas draws from a huge pool of influence which is evident in his approach as a soloist and also as a composer. He performed regularly on the UK circuit with his own quartet before moving earlier this year to New York City where he is currently studying on a post-graduate course at the highly regarded Manhattan School of Music. Lucas’s recent performances include appearances at prestigious venues around New York, including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village. His gig tonight will feature fellow saxophonist the great tenorman Paul Booth (Steve Winwood) as well as the terrific Ross Stanley on piano, highly regarded bassist Fergus Ireland (Kansas Smitty’s House Band), and fellow New York based drummer Douglas Marriner, evidence of Lucas’ rapid ascent into the top ranks of UK musicians....
