About

The 1963 UK film-noir “The Small World of Sammy Lee”, starring Anthony Newley, Julia Foster, Warren Mitchell and Robert Stephens featured an iconic soundtrack by the late, great, Kenny Graham alongside a who's who of the UK's finest jazz musicians of the time. This evening the music, inspired by Kenny's score, will be arranged and led by the brilliant flautist, composer and arranger GARETH LOCKRANE. Over the last few years Gareth has established himself as one of the finest jazz flautists in Europe, with a string of high profile appearances alongside the likes of the James Taylor Quartet, Natalie Williams and the late, great, Bheki Mseleku. It is a measure of Gareth’s growing international standing that he was named “Rising Star on Flute” in the prestigious Downbeat Critics Poll (USA), just one of many awards and accolades he’s received. As well as a performer Gareth's writing and arranging is also highly regarded, his 17-piece Big Band which features his brilliant composing and arranging skills being widely considered to be one of the finest modern jazz big bands in Europe. For this programme Gareth and his quintet, which also features the brilliant saxophonist James Allsop, rising stars Rob Luft on guitar and Jonny Mansfield on vibes and piano along with UK stalwart Dave Whitford on bass, will use the written material associated with the film to base their own improvisations on selected projected images from the movie as they play out on the screen, which we have brought in especially for this occasion. This is the fourth of a series of events that we have held here featuring a combination of live music and visual imagery, all of which have been universally well received. The second half of the gig will feature the band playing their usual, brilliant tunes. A unique night's entertainment and highly recommended. ...
